THE CUT: Influencers attempt to D.A.R.E vaping
The journey of vapes as a piece of culture is fascinating - what once started as a relatively embarrassing alternative to cigarettes has now become so ubiquitous and widely accepted that seeing someone smoke cigarettes instead of vaping almost feels like an oddity. But with the vape's meteoric acceptance has now come the influencer-led attempt to quit en masse, and to de-influence people from taking up the so-called nicotine binky. This is no D.A.R.E campaign, what with its hokey sincerity. But influencers come with their own unpleasant sheen to some, so I'm curious how this movement will fare against Big Vape.

BIG DESK ENERGY: Substack takes a nosedive
For lots of people, Substack, at one point, felt like a nice option for those of us who miss days of LiveJournal. A neutral, nonthreatening place to write your little stories and share your thoughts, with only the minor annoyance of overblown hot takes to contend with. But like with seemingly every social platform these days, our moment in the sun is never met to last. Substack has already had its fair share of bad publicity, but this is certainly a new low. Now, the site will upcharge all subscribers who us iOS, delay payments to writers who use the platform, and make it virtually impossible to toggle this feature off. I guess I'll just keep writing my half-baked culture essays in Google Docs.

THE NEW YORKER: just a little something nice
I just can't stomach sharing with you another horrible AI-related piece, so I have this for you instead: as part of the New Yorkers 100 year anniversary, they've created a lovingly curated site of their culture coverage over the past century. Free yourself from the toil of scrolling through yet another piece of bad news or even worse take on the upcoming Frankenstein adaptation, and lose yourself instead in the joy of an online archive of interesting - if, at times, very dated - culture pieces. If nothing else, it reminds me that there's at least a place in history for culture - surely that will still be true in the next 100 years?
And that's all, folks. Just a quick one for you on this autumnal Friday here in beautiful, blustery Chicago, Illinois. My dark, evil powers are growing stronger by the minute as the leaves begin to change color and the temperatures begin to dip into the 60's. Will I muster up the energy for more spooky, haunting tales for you? Only time will tell.
Ciao for now, see you in two weeks.
A very autumnal-feeling song for you as we near the equinox.
